Mathison Deering

In 2018, Mathison Deering ’22 joined his classmates early for the Early Start program, an early-start program for entering students. The next year, he helped new students in the program as a tutor and plans to do that again this year.

“I love the Early Start program because it gives new students that chance to get to adjust to college life in a more comfortable space and getting to make new friends, instead of jumping headfirst into college life,” he said.

Mathison says to stay focused during remote learning, he’s been writing out everything he needs to get done so it seems less overwhelming and makes him more motivated to get his work done.

And to relieve stress during this uncertain time, he’s been binge-watching his favorite Survivor and Big Brother seasons, solving cubic puzzles, and playing Animal Crossing.

At Thomas College, Mathison is involved with the JMG program. He serves as Vice President, currently.

“I personally love that JMG at Thomas College acts as sort of jack of all trades. You need to know who to talk to on campus about something? JMG knows who. Need to try and find a summer job? JMG has contacts. Need some service hours? JMG knows how to help. They can help you with anything.”

Mathison is so glad to have this resource, especially right now.
