Bill & Joan Alfond Make College More Affordable
Thanks to the Bill & Joan Alfond Family Scholarship, Thomas College is offering two deserving Dexter Regional High School students a scholarship that covers 50% tuition, and 50% of housing/meal plan, for up to four years to a student pursuing an undergraduate degree full-time.
This initiative underscores the shared commitment between the Bill and Joan Alfond family and Thomas College to make higher education attainable for Maine students, transforming lives and strengthening the state’s future.
This scholarship requires an additional submission to accompany your Thomas College application. We want to ensure that the academic scholarship being offered is going to have the greatest impact on the selected student, which is why we require a special video submission.
What does the Bill and Joan Alfond Family Scholarship cover?
This scholarship covers 50% of tuition along with 50% of housing/meal plan for two Dexter Regional High School students for up to four years while pursuing an undergraduate degree full-time at Thomas College. This scholarship does not cover campus fees or college health insurance (if applicable).
Who is eligible?
This scholarship is for high-achieving students who:
- Attend Dexter Regional High School
- Plan to live on the Thomas College campus
- Plan to begin college in Fall 2026
- Preference for this scholarship will be given to Dexter Regional High School students from either Somerset or Piscataquis County
* Disclaimer: the scholarship recipient’s overall financial package cannot exceed the cost of attendance. Outside scholarships may not be accepted.
What is the timeline?
- October 14 – the application goes live
- December 31 – all submission materials (application and video) are due
- January 9, 2026 – Thomas College will notify the applicant who has been selected
- February 9, 2026 – the awardee must pay their Thomas College deposit
How to make your scholarship submission stand out:
- We want to hear your story, so your submission should help us get to know you. Describe your high school experience, and share what your goals are for college. What do you want to do after college, and why would attending Thomas College help you achieve those aspirations?
- Show the elements of your day – walk us through what a typical day is like. It’s OK to include pets, family, gardening, work, hobbies, etc. We want to get a sense of YOU.
